1st Maghaberry Take Their Curiosity to Stormont

1st Maghaberry Cubs explore politics, debate big ideas – and even tackle time travel…

Scouting gives young people the chance to step up, speak out, and discover the world around them. And recently, 1st Maghaberry Cubs took those values all the way to Parliament Buildings at Stormont!

Hosted by Colm Gildernew MLA, the Cubs were given a warm welcome and a brilliant opportunity to ask questions about the role of MLAs, how laws are made, and how decisions at Stormont impact young people and families across Northern Ireland.

With support from Andrew, the Cubs explored the building’s rich history – including its role during World War II – on a day that marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day. They even got to sit in the main chamber and hold a lively debate of their own.

The topic? Time travel.
Arguments flew in all directions, from racing ahead to solve global challenges like poverty and hunger, to travelling back in time to unlock the secrets of the pyramids. With clear points and confident delivery, the Cubs brought their A-game. After weighing it all up, the motion to go back in time just about clinched it!!

A huge thank you to Kirsten for organising such a memorable visit, and to Colm and Andrew for making the experience so engaging.

This visit is a fantastic example of what Scouting is all about: building confidence, inspiring curiosity, and helping young people develop skills for life.
