Volunteers gain practical skills to support every young person
On a sunny Saturday morning, around 40 volunteers came together at Crawfordsburn Activity Centre to build their skills and confidence in supporting young people with additional needs.
Led by Colin Miller and Walter Lambe, the session focused on simple, practical ways to make meetings more inclusive – from adapting activities to managing challenging behaviour. It was packed with real-life examples, useful ideas and honest conversation.
A key message throughout the day was that we’re all ‘MAD’ – Making A Difference. And that’s exactly what our volunteers do every week, helping young people feel included, valued and ready to take on new challenges.
Volunteers explored how small changes can have a big impact. That included focusing on positive behaviour, celebrating when things go well, and creating a consistent environment where young people feel supported. Simple tools like visual prompts and clear communication can also make activities more accessible for everyone.
The sessions were practical, engaging and full of useful takeaways that leaders can bring straight back to their groups. There was plenty of laughter too, creating a relaxed and welcoming space for volunteers to learn together.
At lunchtime, everyone took the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine, connect with others and share their own experiences. It was a chance to swap ideas, ask questions and build confidence alongside fellow volunteers.
By the end of the day, the feedback was clear. The training was not only worthwhile – it was essential. Volunteers left feeling better equipped, more confident and inspired to make Scouts even more inclusive.
Because when we adapt what we do, we don’t just support those who need it most we create better, more engaging experiences for all young people.
It’s all part of building a place to belong, where every young person feels welcome, included and able to take part.
That’s what Scouts is all about. Skills for life, for everyone.
