Explorer Belt teams embrace culture and connection across France and Belgium

Five teams from Scouts NI are halfway through their Explorer Belt expedition, taking on one of the highest awards in Scouting as they travel across France and Belgium.

The Explorer Belt is a ten-day international expedition that challenges Scout Network members to step outside their comfort zones, immerse themselves in new cultures and build a deeper understanding of the people and places they encounter along the way. Through independent travel, teamwork and problem-solving, participants develop confidence, resilience and skills for life.

Now on day five of their adventure, our teams have already experienced unforgettable moments of hospitality and friendship.

The Blanc Team has spent time staying with local families, helping in a school and meeting French Scouts to share culture, stories and campfire songs. The group has also enjoyed supporting France during a World Cup match and says the welcome they have received from local people has been exceptional.

“The hospitality we have received has been unmatched. The local people have been very patient with us as we navigate a new culture, long walks in the heat and the French language.”

For the Rouge Team, the expedition has been a real adventure, complete with challenges, new experiences and plenty of opportunities to meet people along the way.

The team has connected with French Scouts, sampled local food (including snails) and gained a first-hand insight into French culture.

“Although it has been demanding and there have been ups and downs, everyone is enjoying it. The French people and culture are amazing.”

After overcoming a difficult start, the Jaune Team is thriving. The group has met local mayors who have gone out of their way to support their journey, with one even helping to organise accommodation for the following night.

The team has also spent time exploring the region’s history, visiting war memorials dedicated to both local communities and Commonwealth servicemen.

The Bleu Team has encountered remarkable kindness throughout its travels. From a local resident who helped them communicate with a mayor to find a campsite, to a Dutch couple who welcomed them into their garden, the team has experienced the generosity that makes the Explorer Belt so special.

One of their highlights was staying with a family involved in French Scouting, where they enjoyed football, conversation and fresh pastries for breakfast.

“Whilst there have been some ups and downs, it’s been a phenomenal experience overall.”

Meanwhile, the Noir Team has focused on exploring the history of Northern France, particularly the legacy of the First World War. Visits to the Thiepval Memorial, local museums and Commonwealth war cemeteries have helped bring history to life, while evenings spent camping in local people’s gardens have added a unique dimension to the expedition.

Across all five teams, common themes are emerging: adventure, friendship, cultural exchange and the kindness of strangers.

The Explorer Belt is about far more than travelling from one place to another. It encourages young people to gain a deeper understanding of the world around them while developing the confidence and skills that will stay with them long after the expedition ends. This reflects our vision of empowering young people through adventure, teamwork and shared values while helping them build stronger connections with communities both locally and internationally.

As the teams continue their journey through the final days of the challenge, they’ll no doubt face more unexpected twists and turns, meet new people and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Good luck to all five teams as they continue their Explorer Belt adventure across Europe.
