New Squirrel Story Time Area at Crawfordsburn

Date: 20th Sep 2024 Author: Phoebe McDowell

Crawfordsburn Activity Centre has something special to share—its very own Squirrel Story Time area! Officially opened by Stephen Donaldson, along with Jacqui, Marjorie, Alison, and Tracey from the original NI Squirrel Association Team, and Jonathan Gracey, it was a joyful occasion marking the rich 30-year history of Squirrels in Northern Ireland, now known as Squirrel Scouts.

Nestled in the woodland, this charming new space features a giant Story Chair surrounded by bright, colourful benches, making it the perfect setting for Squirrel Scouts to enjoy a good story. Plus, there’s a collection of storybooks on hand, which visitors can borrow and return to the Wardens’ Den.

A special thank you to Sid and the team at Crawfordsburn for bringing this project to life, to Ian from 81st Belfast for creating the gate, and to Jacqui Berryman for kindly sharing this story with us. The Squirrel Association has gifted this lovely spot as a lasting legacy of the Squirrels’ long-standing presence in Northern Ireland!

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
