Media Literacy Sessions for Scouts

Date: 10th Apr 2026 Author: Phoebe McDowell

Scout groups across Northern Ireland are invited to take part in media literacy sessions delivered by Nerve Centre, in partnership with Ofcom and the NI Science Festival.

These interactive sessions help young people build confidence in questioning what they see online. Through games, real-life examples and group challenges, Scouts will explore how misinformation spreads and how to think more carefully before believing or sharing content.

During the session, Scouts will learn how to:

  • Spot misinformation and fake content
  • Question exaggerated claims and emotional headlines
  • Recognise unreliable sources
  • Understand why misleading content is created and shared
  • Explore how algorithms influence what appears in their feeds
  • Use simple fact-checking tips and tools

The session helps young people pause and ask: “Is this actually true?”

No experience is needed – just curiosity and a willingness to get stuck in.

Sessions can be delivered online or in person, depending on what works best for your group, and can take place at a time that suits you.

Leaders can register their group’s interest using the form below and provide three possible dates they are available. Rachel McDermott from Nerve Centre will then be in touch to confirm arrangements.
