JOTA-JOTI 2025

Date: 24th Oct 2025 Author: Phoebe McDowell

Young people from 9th Bangor Scouts, Hydra Explorers, and members from Scrabo and 3rd Ards Explorers came together at Crawfordsburn Activity Centre for this year’s Jamboree on the Air Jamboree on the Internet (JOTA-JOTI).

Organised by Jack Denvir from 9th Bangor, the event brought together Cubs, Scouts and Explorers for a full day of hands-on activities exploring communication, technology, and global connections.

With expert support from the Bangor and District Amateur Radio Society, participants made their first radio contacts with stations across the UK and Ireland, and even tried their hand at Morse Code challenges. They also explored how handheld and network radios work, learning how communication can continue even when other systems fail.

The RAYNET team joined the event with their impressive Command Vehicle, giving Scouts the chance to see how emergency communication networks are set up and maintained during major events or crises. Meanwhile, Hydra Explorers ran the JOTI side of the day, helping participants connect online with Scouts from across the world – from Australia to Mexico!

A big thank you goes to Jack Denvir for leading the event and to the Crawfordsburn Warden team for hosting, the Bangor and District Amateur Radio Society for running the stations, RAYNET for their ongoing support, and Hydra Explorers for making the online element possible.

This event is a great example of how Scouts across NI are connecting, learning, and developing skills for life in new and exciting ways.
