Cubs’ unforgettable night at Exploris

Date: 26th Jun 2026 Author: Phoebe McDowell

Sleeping next to sharks might not be your typical Friday night, but for 1st Greyabbey Cubs, it was all part of the adventure.

The Cubs headed to Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry to complete their Nights Away badge, and from the moment they arrived, it was anything but ordinary. As the doors closed to the public, their adventure was just getting started.

They explored the aquarium after dark, discovering what happens when the lights go down and the sea life settles in. There were challenges to crack, a scavenger hunt to complete, and plenty of chances to work together, think on their feet and give things a go.

When it finally came time to wind down, the Cubs rolled out their sleeping bags right beside the tanks. With fish gliding past, and sharks and rays close by, they snuggled in for a bedtime story.

The next morning, the Cubs stepped behind the scenes to help the keepers get ready for the day. They created enrichment toys for the animals – from playful otters and curious penguins to capybara and colourful parrots – learning how small actions can make a big difference to animal wellbeing.

It’s experiences like this that stick. Not just because they’re fun (although they definitely are), but because they help young people grow in confidence, try new things and feel part of something big.

For the Cubs of 1st Greyabbey, this was more than a sleepover. It was laughter, teamwork, new experiences and memories they’ll be talking about for years to come.

A huge thank you to the team at Exploris Aquarium for making it all possible.

Thank you to Rebekah Armitage for sharing the story and photos.
