Building Hill Skills in the Mournes

Date: 14th Nov 2025 Author: Phoebe McDowell

The rain didn’t dampen spirits as 28 leaders from across NI took to the Mournes for Hillwalking Permit assessments and Hill Skills 1 training.

Despite the wet and windy conditions, there was plenty of enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the day. Leaders took part in skills sessions and assessments, learning navigation, safety and group management techniques – all to help them support young people to explore the hills safely and confidently.

The day was organised by Andrew Stacey (NI Activity Permits Lead), with support from seven dedicated Assessors and Trainers who shared their knowledge and experience throughout the event. Among those taking part were leaders from 1st Randalstown, who described the day as “thoroughly enjoyable” and said they’re already looking forward to the next stage in their hillwalking journey.

A big thank you goes to everyone who took part and helped make the day such a success – from those running the sessions to the leaders who braved the rain with a smile! Training like this helps prepare more volunteers to lead adventures in the hills, giving young people even more chances to explore, grow and gain skills for life.
