7th Larne honour Princess Victoria tragedy

Date: 5th Mar 2026 Author: Phoebe McDowell

Cubs and Scouts from 7th Larne braved challenging weather to attend the annual M.V. Princess Victoria memorial service in Larne.

The young people joined members of the local community at the Princess Victoria Memorial to remember those who lost their lives when the ferry sank during a storm in 1953. Each year, families who lost loved ones return to the memorial to honour those who never made it home.

By attending the service, the Cubs and Scouts showed respect for the community’s history and helped keep the memory of the tragedy alive for future generations.

The commemorations also included the annual Princess Victoria Memorial Lecture, organised by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, which took place at Larne Museum on a Friday evening.

Through experiences like these, young people build empathy, confidence and a sense of responsibility – skills that will stay with them for life.
