Our Explorer Belt teams complete unforgettable European adventure

Date: 17th Jul 2026 Author: Phoebe McDowell

Five teams from Scouts NI have successfully completed their 2026 Explorer Belt expedition, bringing to an end ten days of adventure, discovery and personal growth across France and Belgium.

The Explorer Belt is one of the highest awards in Scouting, challenging Scout Network members to step outside their comfort zones, immerse themselves in different cultures and gain a deeper understanding of the people and places they encounter along the way. Through independent travel, teamwork and problem-solving, participants develop confidence, resilience and skills for life.

Over the course of the expedition, five teams travelled from Albert in northern France to Ypres in Belgium, following a route shaped by the history of the First World War and the Battle of the Somme, which marks its 110th anniversary this year.

Along the way, participants experienced the warmth and generosity of communities across both countries. They stayed with local families, met Scouts from across Europe, navigated language barriers, explored local history and embraced opportunities to learn more about French and Belgian culture, food and traditions.

A particularly meaningful moment came when three members of Scouts NI took part in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, laying a wreath in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the First World War.

The expedition showcased what Scouting does best: helping young people build friendships, gain confidence and discover what they are capable of when they challenge themselves. Throughout the journey, participants demonstrated teamwork, adaptability and determination while creating memories that will last a lifetime. These experiences reflect Scouts’ vision of empowering young people through adventure, teamwork and shared values, while strengthening connections between communities and cultures.

Following the expedition, the teams travelled to Brussels for some well-earned recovery time. Participants took part in post-expedition debrief sessions, celebrated their achievements together and visited the iconic Atomium before returning home.

The adventure may be over, but there is still one final step remaining on the Explorer Belt journey. Participants will now prepare presentations reflecting on their experiences, projects and personal achievements as part of the award assessment process.

Every participant should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved. They are a credit to their Scout Groups, their families and to Scouts NI.

A special thank you goes to Caleb Mills and Emma Weir for their leadership, support and encouragement throughout the expedition, helping make this incredible experience possible.

Congratulations to all involved, and best of luck with your final Explorer Belt presentations.
