Bushcraft comes to Northern Ireland
Volunteers from across Northern Ireland came together at Crawfordsburn Activity Centre on Saturday 13 June for the first Bushscout.UK skills day in Northern Ireland.
The day filled quickly, with 30 places snapped up and a waiting list to match. Volunteers travelled from right across Northern Ireland and represented every section – from those working with our youngest members through to Scouts, Explorers, Network and adult roles.
A team from Bushscout.UK travelled over from England to deliver a day of practical outdoor skills. From putting up shelters and lighting fires, to safe tool use, campfire cooking and outdoor teaching, the focus was on giving volunteers simple, practical ideas they can take straight back to their groups.
It wasn’t just about learning new skills. The day helped volunteers build confidence, try new things and share ideas with others. The Bushscout approach works across all sections, helping leaders adapt activities for different ages.
There was a real buzz throughout the day. Volunteers shared stories, learned from experienced instructors and connected with others who care about giving young people fun, adventurous experiences.
The strong demand shows just how much appetite there is for practical, outdoor learning across Northern Ireland. It’s also a first step towards building a local Bushscout presence, helping even more volunteers bring outdoor adventure to life for young people.
Everyone who attended will be invited to stay involved and help shape what Bushscout could look like locally.
A huge thank you to the Bushscout.UK team and the volunteers who made the day possible.
Skills for life were in full flow – with a bit of smoke, sparks and paracord along the way!
