New Safety Learning
New Safety Learning:
As we onboard the Membership System, The Scouts updated and improved our mandatory safety learning, creating a new course which helps you to feel confident to deliver activities safely and understand what to do if an incident occurs. The course now covers:
- What our safety policy is and why it’s important
- What your responsibilities are in terms of safety
- How to assess and manage risks
- How to respond to and report incidents
Following the prevention of future death, this course has also been developed alongside the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the UK’s leading accident prevention charity and specialists in safety advice.

When you need to complete the new learning by…
Members of our movement, apart from ‘Retired Members’ and those with the role of ‘Non-Member needs Disclosure’, are required to complete the new mandatory safety learning.
Everyone is required to complete safety learning as part of their role will need to complete the new course by 14 July 2025, however individuals will need to check their role or expiry date on My Membership, as you may need to complete the learning earlier.
For further support, please contact your District Lead Volunteer, Volunteer Development Team Lead or the Scouts NI Transformation Team (digitalphase@scoutsni.org).

Committing to learning and development
At Scouts NI, we believe that the safety of our young people is central to how we operate as a movement. Through the commitment of our leaders, we believe that we can showcase the importance of taking time to invest in our development and widen our knowledge around processes and support available. As noted above, the new Safety learning acknowledges the updates to the policies and processes which will ensure that we remain a proactive organisation while allowing for leaders to be reassured of the steps to take should an incident appear.
Across Scouts NI, we are advocating that we aim to complete the new Safety learning by the end of June 2025. This will allow us a two-week window to work with those who are struggling with accessing the Membership System or requiring further support with the learning module.
