International Women’s Day 2025
This International Women’s Day, we want to shine a light on the young women, leaders, and volunteers who inspire others through their courage, commitment, and kindness.
Whether they’re breaking barriers, overcoming challenges, or making sure that every young person gets the best possible experience in Scouting, these women truly embody our values.
Here are just a few stories of women from our community who are making a real difference, as shared by those who know them best:

Emily Foster: Youth Member – Her Strength and Compassion
Emily, a Youth Member of 1st Rathfriland, is a true inspiration. Over the past year, she’s faced health challenges and anxiety, but has shown incredible resilience. Emily is also a wonderful support to her dad, who is visually impaired, and she continues to be a dedicated member of her Scout group. Despite facing tough times, she never hesitates to give back to her family and community.
“Emily constantly inspires everyone with her resilience. We are so grateful for Emily and for her younger brother Harry who has been a great source of support to her. We’re so proud to have her in our Scouting family!”

Valda Weir: Team Member – Her Lifelong Commitment to Scouting
Valda has served as a leader in 112th Belfast for over 30 years. She leads the Squirrel section with quiet dedication, always putting others before herself. Valda’s commitment to Scouting is unwavering, and her actions speak volumes about the kind of role model she is to young people and fellow leaders alike.
“Valda is very unassuming and just gets on with her role. She has worked faithfully every week as a leader in Squirrels for over 30 years. She is an example of commitment for everyone.”

Kayleigh Finlay: NI Youth Lead – Her Passionate Leadership and Vision
As a leader at 1st Ards, our NI Youth Lead and a Chair of the Trustee Board, Kayleigh gives her all to every project she leads. Her ability to lead with empathy and vision is a true asset to Scouts NI.
“Kayleigh puts her all into everything that she does. She has been instrumental in the planning for our upcoming trip to Arizona in 2026. She always makes sure she has the best interests of the entire group when chairing our meetings.”

Pamela Hale: Staff Member – Her Ongoing Support Behind the Scenes
Pamela works tirelessly behind the scenes at Scouts HQ, providing support and guidance to leaders across the country. Whether it’s offering advice, answering questions, or lending a helping hand, Pamela is always there to make sure others have what they need to succeed.
“Pamela is always a welcoming face when we call into the office and a friendly voice on the phone. It is always a pleasure to deal with Pamela and to know that you’ll get the correct answer, support and help. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience that we all benefit from.“

Liz Dudgeon: Team Leader – Her Going Above and Beyond for Every Cub
Liz, a Cub leader at 62nd Belfast, is known for her unwavering commitment to every young person in her care. She ensures that every Cub – including those with disabilities – has the same opportunities to grow, learn, and have fun. Liz’s passion for Scouting is evident in everything she does, from camps to everyday activities.
“Liz has tirelessly been working as a Cub leader within her group for quite a while now. She will go above and beyond for each and every Cub within her pack , no matter what, and makes sure every Cub has the best possible experience. She regularly put others before herself and does not realise the impact she has on the lives of others.“

Janine Bowen: NI First Aid Coordinator – Her Creativity and Positivity
Janine’s creativity and passion for volunteering shine through in everything she does. As a leader at 115th Belfast, she runs imaginative and exciting events for Beavers, and her dedication to first aid makes her an invaluable resource in the Scouting community and beyond.
“Janine has such a creative imagination. Her passion for volunteering, helping others regardless of age or who they are is truly inspiring. Watching Janine live her life to the full and positively influencing so many people is truly amazing and exhausting to watch.“
These women demonstrate what it means to be a part of something bigger than yourself. They’re living proof that through Scouting, we can all grow, develop, and make a lasting impact in Northern Ireland.
Thank you for all that you do!
