Scouts NI Explorers Discord Server

Are you an Explorer who wants to link up with other Explorers from across Northern Ireland, swap ideas for your Top Award / Young Leader activities, kick back with regular Discord games nights, and be the first to find out about exciting camp and adventure opportunities?

Or maybe you’re an Explorer Leader, and your Unit would like its own set of private channels so everyone can stay in touch and engaged outside of your weekly meetings?

Then our Explorers Discord Server is for you!

What is Discord?

Discord is a free voice, video, and text chat app that’s used by tens of millions of people ages 13+ to talk and hang out with their communities and friends. Safety is core to the Discord platform, and it doesn’t reveal users’ phone numbers or email addresses; check out the Discord Safety Centre for more information.

People use Discord daily to talk about many things, ranging from art projects and family trips to homework and mental health support. It’s a home for communities of any size, but it’s most widely used by small and active groups of people who talk regularly.

The vast majority of servers are private, invite-only spaces for groups of friends and communities to stay in touch and spend time together. There are also larger, more open communities, generally centred around specific topics such as popular games like Minecraft and Fortnite. All conversations are opt-in, so people have total control over who they interact with and what their experience on Discord is.

The Scouts NI Explorers server is private and moderated by a team of Explorer Leaders. Only people with an invite link are able to join the initial ‘Investitures’ channel, which is isolated from the rest of the server and its members. There is a verification process in place which must be completed in order to get access to the rest of the server and interact with its members.

Our server was piloted with a small number of Explorer Units over an 18-month period, to not only ensure that it’s a safe space with tested security but also to tweak and customise the server to our Explorers’ liking. This has included adding games, an XP (experience) rank system, and a music channel which Explorers can control.

I’m an Explorer – How Do I Join the Server?

Ask your parent/guardian to send your full Discord username (including the #number) to your Explorer Leader. They should also ask your Explorer Leader to forward this to discord@scoutsni.org. Please don’t email this address directly, as only requests which come from known Leaders’ email addresses will be accepted.

I’m an Explorer Leader – What Do I Do With These Discord Requests?

Verify that they have come from the parent’s / guardian’s email address which you have on file. Then forward it to discord@scoutsni.org, along with the Young Person’s name, date of birth, and the name of your Unit and District. Please ensure that when forwarding this information, you do it from an email address that is listed in your Compass record; requests from other addresses won’t be approved.

I’m an Explorer Leader – How Does My Unit Get Its Own Private Channels?

Email discord@scoutsni.org from an email address that is listed in your Compass record, and we’ll be in touch.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
